Driving Tour

Enjoy a stroll on our Wetlands Boardwalk in the swamp at the Welcome Center and you may catch a glimpse of an alligator or two. St. James Parish also offers a driving tour of the parish, which takes you from I-10 south to the Veterans Memorial Bridge westward to the Sunshine Bridge.

  • On the East Bank of the river (I-10 Exit 194, heading south): 
    • Blind River along Highway 61 also known as "Bayou des Acadians"
    • Imperial Sugar Company
    • St. James Parish Welcome Center (corner of Highway 641 and Highway 61)
  • Bonfire area at Christmas-time along the river:
    • Felix Poche' Plantation Bed and Breakfast and RV Resort, built shortly after the Civil War
    • Indian Mounds along Highway 3125 above Belmont Plantation Site
    • Manresa (Jefferson College) built in 1831
    • Perique Tobacco grown along Highway 642, Grand Point
    • St. James Parish Courthouse, Convent
    • St. Joseph Catholic Church, built in 1921
    • St. Mary's Chapel, built in 1875
    • St. Michael's Church, built in 1833, Lourdes Grotto built in 1876
    • Sunshine Bridge joins St. James Parish with Ascension Parish
